The 1st round of the Hunts Junior Cup saw Ramsey Pavilion make the short trip to take on Somersham Town Res and it was the away side who were the quickest out of the traps as they raced out to an early three goal lead. Jake Burton opened the scoring from the spot before Ben McKinnell added soon a second. No doubt it was a moment to savour for McKinnell as he opened his goal scoring account for Pavilion. In form Jamie Hurst then added a third goal to leave Somersham somewhat shell shocked. All credit to the home side though as, despite conceding three in the first half, they managed to maintain their composure and soon they were back in the game.
Some sloppy defending from Pavilion, particularly from set pieces, let the home side back into the game and before long what looked like a forgone conclusion was very much alive again. A real cup tie this one as an eventful first half eventually ended with the score at 3 apiece.
After letting a three-goal lead slip away, the Pavilion players must have had the half time team talk from Player/Manager Matt Brading still ringing in their ears as they began the second half. Whatever Brading had said seemed to do the trick as his side looked far more assured at the back while dominating possession and creating chances at the other end of the pitch.
Before long, the away side had regained their lead as Jake Burton added his second from the spot, and his fifth in two games, to put Pavilion 4-3 up before a Tom Lloyd screamer late in the game put the tie to bed. 5-3 the final score, with the win putting Pavilion into round 2 where they will face last year’s winners of this competition Eaton Socon Res. The Round 2 fixture is scheduled to take place at Cricketfield Lane, Ramsey on 7th October.
More cup action this weekend for the Pavos as they travel to Cambs League 1B outfit St. Ives Rangers in the Creake Charity Shield. 15.00 kick off at St Ives Outdoor Centre.
